Testimonies & Reviews

July 20, 2008

Yesterday, we headed to Becki's hometown of Wheeling WV for Ride for a Reason. The ride in WV/PA was incredible - gorgeous scenery and lots of climbing. We were very glad we had our 32 rings as we rode the century. There was low traffic, and the vast majority of the traffic was patient on the hills--actually waiting for a clear view before passing.

The down hills were fantastic. I tried to practice going fast and reading curves with mixed success. They advertised 8,700ft of climb, but I had 8,333 (I usually assume 80% of my reading is closer to reality, so more like mid to upper 6K) and a guy from Washington PA had 7,700 ft. He thought his was accurate. Whatever--it was challenging. The toughest thing was dealing with the heat. In the afternoon, the sun was strong, and the hills didn't let up. We had occasional shade, but not as much as we had in the morning. We drank PowerAde at every stop, and a lot of water.

There were 67 people on the ride, and maybe 10 or so riding the century. Some bailed due to the heat.  I was the only female on the century.  Some Harley riders provided SAG, and one of the biker babes was concerned about me. I guess I was sweating or something. Not a pretty picture, but I was fine.

They had a barbeque after the ride. The after ride get together was at a shelter at the local pool, about 3 miles north of downtown Wheeling.  After a delicious supper,  we then took the best feeling showers in the world before heading home to watch the TDF.

This is a well organized charity ride, with this being their 3rd year.  They offer 20, 40, 66, 80 and 100 mile routes.  Wheeling is about 2 1/2 hours straight east--gorgeous scenery, and the city of Wheeling is an old steel town and port, with lots of interesting architecture. I highly recommend you try this ride next year.
